At Carry Forward Learning Institute, we believe some of the most powerful learning begins with lived experience.
The Institute was created to transform the lessons, insights, and practical wisdom found in Marguerite J. Joseph’s books and more than three decades of work in social care and community development across the Caribbean into learning experiences that others can use.
Through books, facilitator training, workshops, and community-based learning, we take ideas beyond the page and put them into the hands of people who can use them to create meaningful conversations, strengthen communities, support healing, and encourage positive change.
Our purpose is simple: to turn experience into learning that others can carry forward.

A book can begin a conversation.
But when its ideas are explored together, discussed openly, practiced, and shared, that conversation can reach much further.
Carry Forward Learning Institute was founded on the belief that valuable knowledge should not stop with the person who first learned it—or with the pages on which it was written.
It should be carried forward.
Our books are the starting point.
We design identities that speak authentically connecting aesthetics, meaning, and strategy into one voice.
The books explore subjects that are often difficult to talk about but important to address—from listening and healing to crisis, recovery, mental health, relationships, and what we choose to pass on to others.
Our facilitator programs take the ideas and frameworks within selected books and turn them into structured experiences that trained facilitators can bring into their own communities.
Rather than simply teaching the content of a book, our programs prepare facilitators to create spaces for reflection, conversation, participation, and learning.
Our goal is to help community leaders, educators, practitioners, and others confidently carry the work forward.
Not every organization needs a full facilitator program.
Our workshops provide shorter, focused opportunities for groups, organizations, and workplaces to engage with the themes and frameworks behind our work.
These sessions are designed to encourage meaningful discussion while giving participants practical ideas they can take with them.
Everything eventually comes back to impact.
The purpose of our books, training, and workshops is not simply to deliver information. It is to reach the young people, families, communities, and workplaces for whom the work was created.
We want learning to travel beyond the room in which it happens.
Our work is grounded in real life, drawing on decades of direct personal and professional experience rather than theory removed from the realities people face.
People should be active participants in learning. Our programs create opportunities to listen, question, reflect, share and make meaning together.
Learning becomes more valuable when people can use it. We turn ideas into frameworks, conversations and tools facilitators can apply in their own settings.
One person should not be the endpoint of meaningful learning. By preparing facilitators and working with organizations, knowledge keeps moving outward.
Every Carry Forward program starts with a body of written work.
Current and developing areas include Words We Carry, Hitting Rock Bottom, and Mental Health in the Workplace, alongside Marguerite J. Joseph’s wider collection of published work.
Each facilitator program is developed carefully, book by book, with the aim of preserving the heart of the original work while making its lessons accessible to groups and communities.
Carry Forward Learning Institute is the home of Marguerite J. Joseph’s books, facilitator training, and community workshops. The Institute takes learning developed through more than 30 years of experience in social care and community development across the Caribbean and turns it into practical learning experiences that others can carry forward.
Our work is centred on four areas: Books. Training. Workshops. Impact.
Our work begins with lived and professional experience.
Rather than starting with theory alone, the Institute builds on the lessons, insights, and frameworks found in Marguerite J. Joseph’s writing and develops them into experiences that people can explore together.
The aim is not simply to read about an idea, but to create opportunities for conversation, reflection, learning, and practical application.
A facilitator program takes the framework of one of Marguerite J. Joseph’s books or book series and develops it into a structured learning experience that can be facilitated with a group.
Facilitator training prepares participants to understand the material and guide others through the conversations and learning experiences connected to it.
These are multi-week training programs designed to help facilitators carry the work into the communities and organizations they serve.
The Institute is developing its facilitator programs for people who want to bring meaningful learning into their communities and organizations.
This may include community leaders, educators, facilitators, practitioners, and organizations looking for structured ways to engage people around the themes explored in the books.
Because each program is developed for a particular audience and subject area, the intended participants may vary from one program to another.
Words We Carry is the Institute’s current facilitator program.
It is based on Marguerite J. Joseph’s three-book Words We Carry series and is designed around themes of listening, healing, and choosing what we pass on.
The program is intended to create a facilitator-led experience for young adults and the communities that support them.
