What is Carry Forward Learning Institute?

Carry Forward Learning Institute is the home of Marguerite J. Joseph’s books, facilitator training, and community workshops. The Institute takes learning developed through more than 30 years of experience in social care and community development across the Caribbean and turns it into practical learning experiences that others can carry forward.

Our work is centred on four areas: Books. Training. Workshops. Impact.

Our work begins with lived and professional experience.

Rather than starting with theory alone, the Institute builds on the lessons, insights, and frameworks found in Marguerite J. Joseph’s writing and develops them into experiences that people can explore together.

The aim is not simply to read about an idea, but to create opportunities for conversation, reflection, learning, and practical application.

A facilitator program takes the framework of one of Marguerite J. Joseph’s books or book series and develops it into a structured learning experience that can be facilitated with a group.

Facilitator training prepares participants to understand the material and guide others through the conversations and learning experiences connected to it.

These are multi-week training programs designed to help facilitators carry the work into the communities and organizations they serve.

The Institute is developing its facilitator programs for people who want to bring meaningful learning into their communities and organizations.

This may include community leaders, educators, facilitators, practitioners, and organizations looking for structured ways to engage people around the themes explored in the books.

Because each program is developed for a particular audience and subject area, the intended participants may vary from one program to another.

Words We Carry is the Institute’s current facilitator program.

It is based on Marguerite J. Joseph’s three-book Words We Carry series and is designed around themes of listening, healing, and choosing what we pass on.

The program is intended to create a facilitator-led experience for young adults and the communities that support them.

Additional programs are being developed book by book.

Two of the next areas identified by the Institute are:

Hitting Rock Bottom — a facilitator program for groups supporting people through crisis and recovery.

Mental Health in the Workplace — a workshop and training track designed for employers and teams.

These programs are currently listed as coming soon.

Not yet.

The books are where the Institute’s programs begin, but facilitator training has not yet been developed for every published title.

Carry Forward Learning Institute is building its program library gradually, adapting selected books and series into learning experiences that can be used by facilitators, communities, and organizations.

Facilitator training is designed for people who want to learn how to guide others through a Carry Forward program. These are more in-depth, multi-week learning experiences. Workshops are shorter and more focused. They are intended for organizations and groups that want to engage with a particular framework or subject without undertaking a full facilitator training program.

Because each program is built from a particular book or series, the books form an important part of the learning experience.

Specific reading requirements will be provided with the information for each individual program.

Carry Forward Learning Institute grew out of Marguerite J. Joseph’s more than three decades of work in social care and community development across the Caribbean.

The Institute’s purpose, however, is to turn that experience into learning that can be carried forward by community leaders, educators, organizations, and others who find the material relevant to the people they serve.

Specific availability and participation details will be provided for each program.

Carry Forward Learning Institute is developing shorter, focused workshops for organizations that want to engage with a particular framework without completing a full facilitator program.

Organizations interested in workshops can contact the Institute to discuss the subject area and the needs of their group.

Carry Forward describes its multi-week facilitator training as facilitator certification.

The specific requirements for successfully completing and receiving certification should be outlined on the page for each individual facilitator program.

You can join the Carry Forward Learning Institute mailing list or waitlist to receive updates when new programs open. The upcoming Hitting Rock Bottom and Mental Health in the Workplace programs are among the training opportunities currently being developed.

CARRY IT FORWARD

Books. Training. Workshops. Impact.

That is Carry Forward Learning Institute.

We begin with lived experience. We turn it into learning. And we equip others to carry that learning forward.
